Causes of Diabetes
What are the Common Causes of Diabetes?

Cause of Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus is most commonly called diabetes and it is a group of related diseases wherein the body loses its ability to regulate the amount of glucose in the blood. A person with diabetes does not have the ability to produce enough insulin and the insufficiently produced insulin cannot make the cells respond to it.
Diabetes increases the levels of blood sugar in the body and this produces the most common symptoms like; frequent urination or polyuria, increased thirst or polydipsia and increased hunger or polyphagia.
Glucose is a very vital component in the blood; it provides the energy for the body to perform its daily duties. Glucose is produced from the food we eat by the liver and it is regulated by insulin and other hormones.
Insulin is produced by the pancreas which secretes important enzymes vital for the digestion of food. It allows glucose to travel from the blood and into the liver, muscle and fat cells where it will be used as fuel.
A person with diabetes does not have the capacity to move the glucose into the cells trapping it in the bloodstreams.
There are two main types of diabetes; type 1 and type 2 diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the body can not produce enough insulin while in type 2 diabetes, the body has no ability to properly use insulin.
Causes of Diabetes in Type 1 Diabetes
Since type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, the immune system attacks the cells directly in the pancreas, which produces insulin.
Genetic causes may be responsible for type 1 diabetes though this factor is more common in type 2 diabetes.
Viral infections due to environmental factors may contribute in the development of type 1 diabetes. Among the viruses that may cause type 1 diabetes are; enteric virus which violates the intestinal tract
Causes of Diabetes in Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is mostly cause by genes; this means that this condition runs in the family. There are several genes that have been pinpointed to have direct relation to type 2 diabetes. Developing type 2 diabetes may have some risk factors such as; high blood pressure, increase in the blood triaglyceride levels, high fat-diet, too much alcohol intake, inactive lifestyle, obesity and gestational diabetes.
Age is another factor considered to cause type 2 diabetes. The risk to have type 2 diabetes increases at 45 years of age and it rises considerably after the age of 65.
Ethnicity is reported to cause type 2 diabetes; certain races such as; Native American, Hispanic Americans, African Americans and Japanese Americans are believed to be of higher risk in developing type 2 diabetes.
Causes of Diabetes in Children
Type 1 diabetes is the common type of diabetes of children; although there are a few numbers diagnosed with type2. Causes of diabetes in children are not yet fully established though there are some factors that may be responsible for this disease in children like; viruses, environment, genetics, childhood vaccinations and food allergies.
